Ritinjali-Pioneer Learning Centre: A new Learning centre that was set up on 16th October

Ritinjali, in collaboration with Pioneer Urban & Land Infrastructure Ltd. opened a new Learning Centre at Pioneer’s construction site in Sector -62 Gurgaon to cater to the migrant labour population living adjacent to the buildings. The centre was inaugurated on Oct 16th, 2014 early morning at 8:30 a.m and saw many parents line up to enroll their children aged 4 and above. The day began with registrations and an hour-long music and activities session. The children enjoyed Hindi and English rhymes and enthusiastically enacted hand actions to relate stories. The session was followed by a mid-day meal comprising bananas, biscuits and Frooti.

The new centre has 3 classrooms and a beautifully decorated verandah which can be used to play hopscotch or serve a mid-day meal to children. The space further opens up into a lawn and play area for music and other outdoor lessons.

The 3 classes cater to different learning requirements of children at different ages. The first class enrolled students between the ages of 4-6 while the second and third classes enrolled children between 7 – 10 and 10+ respectively. We received more than 100 registrations and the attendance has been excellent in the first week, despite the upcoming Diwali festivities.

Even though more than 60% of the labour is migrant and relocates with 2-3 months, the centre will give children a first chance to start learning and develop an interest in studies. The programmes have been designed to create an interest in learning and provide basic skills in numeracy, literacy along with general awareness, health and hygiene, and other life skills. Three teachers will be taking care of the classes under the supervision of teachers from Pallavan School and Ritinjali.
