Empowering Disadvantaged Young People and Women in Jhalawar, Rajasthan

Jhalawar, one of the 33 districts of Rajasthan is located in the south-east corner of Rajasthan at the edge of the Malwa plateau. The State of Madhya Pradesh borders Jhalawar on the south-west and in the east of Jhalawar district.   The key characteristics of the district are as under:

  1. Jhalawar has a population of 1,411,129 of which male and female are 725,143 and 685,986 respectively (Census 2011).
  2. The literacy rate of the district is 61% which is below the national average of 74.04%. 
  3. 83% of the total area of the district is rural and only 17% is urbanised.
  4. Major occupations in the district are agriculture, mining, animal husbandry, cotton weaving etc.

The Second Chance School, Jhalawar started on November 1, 2016. Before starting the project, Ritinjali conducted a baseline survey to understand the needs and aspirations of the youth and women in the district.

Findings: A total of 80 people were interviewed: 50 young adults (25 girls and 25 boys) and 30 women. The major findings from the interviews are listed below:

  • Most  young adults either wished to learn a computer course or enroll in any activity related to income generation
  • It was encouraging to find that many girls showed keen interest in learning a computer course
  • Most of the girls expressed interest in a tailoring/embroidery course and/or  a beautician course
  • Some  young adults and  women who have dropped out of regular schooling wanted to complete at least Senior Secondary Education through Open Schooling or Distance Education Programmes
  • Most importantly, almost all the women wished to learn Khadi weaving/traditional weaving practices and preparing dress materials/other clothes required for daily use
  • In addition, many young people wished to get trained either as plumbers or electricians

Based on the findings of the survey, Ritinjali decided to start a Computer Literacy Centre, a Tailoring and Stitching Centre, a Plumbing Training Course and a Handloom. Initially, it was decided that Ritinjali will cater to the villages coming under the Kolana Gram Panchayat and the centres would be based in Munderi, a village located at around 3 km from Jhalawar district headquarters across the Kalisindh river.

  1. Computer Literacy Centre– The computer centre started on 2nd November 2016 with 12 students which has increased to 32.The project caters to students from villages like Munderi, Patpadia, Semli Patpadia, Kolana, Guwadi Khurd, Guwadi, and Kalan.
  2. The Stitching Centre – There are 19 ladies from Munderi village who attend classes at the centre.
  3. The handloom – The handloom machines have been procured and classes are scheduled to begin in March 2017
  4. The plumbing centre – The survey has been done and the list of the students is ready.
