On April 6, 2014, approximately 90 students and 10 staff members from different Ritinjali Learning and Vocational Centers as well as the Second Chance School participated in the ‘Sport for Development’ campaign which was organised by the Paralympic Committee of India at the National Stadium, New Delhi. The event was organised as part of a global effort to change the perceptions towards people with disabilities.

Over 5000 school children participated in a 3 km run starting at the National stadium, which was flagged off by Padma Shri Milkha Singh in the presence of Padma Shri Girisha Hosanagara Nagarajegowda. Mr Ajay Jadeja was the Guest of Honour and several other sportsmen and women in different fields including Saina Nehwal, Sandeep Singh, Ashish Nehra and Vijendra Singh were also present to cheer on the children. A contingent of children with disabilities also participated to bring attention to the core issue for which Paralympic Committee of India has taken the initiative to reach out to masses as “Change Makers”. Padma Shri Milkha Singh also spoke to the children and inspired them to work hard and carve their own destinies “HATHON KI LAKEERO SE TAKDIR NAHI BANTI, TAKDIR MEHNAT SE INSAN APNE AAP BANATA HAI”.

Following the run, an entertainment programme was organised for all children with performances by Daler Mehndi and Diwakar Sharma. The children thoroughly enjoyed themselves and found it to be an inspiring event as sportsmen and women shared their stories with them.
