Second Chance School - Mahipalpur, Delhi

Ritinjali believes that all young people in our society deserve the opportunity to be included in 'lifelong learning'. Our lives, our environment and our societies are changing so rapidly that we need to learn throughout our lives to keep pace with developments around us. Ritinjali’s efforts are directed towards making this learning more accessible so that certain people and certain groups do not continue to be marginalised.

Ritinjali started the Second Chance School at Mahipalpur in 2003 - a school for urban deprived young adults who unfortunately had to end the educational chapter early in their lives. The School is run on a rolling admission basis and the boys stay with us while they catch-up with their studies. Once they have the required qualifications they begin internships or training and then start working. They leave the Second Chance School on completing a year in a full-time job so that they get enough time to feel stable on their own. Seven new boys joined the Second Chance School this year and we have around 15 boys staying with us in the present batch.

In the urban scenario, Ritinjali has observed a variety of issues that have a ball-and-chain effect on urban development. These issues including economical backwardness and deprivation, insufficient schooling, inadequate earnings, lack of domestic and community responsibility and contribution etc. are all rooted in a ‘lack of opportunity’. Among the many factors that lead to a lack of opportunity, the most prevalent and urgent is the absence in opportunities for higher education, resulting in misdirected urban deprived youth. This further impedes the youth’s abilities to earn effective incomes and contribute to domestic and social responsibilities. These young people are therefore excluded from the present and appear to be without a future.

The boys who join the Second Chance School come from different backgrounds and include young adults who are literate / illiterate, those who have dropped out of the formal education system, who do not have any knowledge of English required for office jobs, young adults who are not equipped with technical skill-sets, and entrepreneurial young adults without means expertise and direction.

The Second Chance School provides a secure, loving and stimulating environment to the boys through a range of learning experiences designed and implemented in collaboration with Pallavanjali, an inclusive school providing education and life/vocational training to children and young adults from diverse backgrounds and different abilities. Pallavanjali’s Work Readiness Programme strives to improve a student’s essential skills and workplace- relevant skills using a meaningful, practical, culturally appropriate, and transferable approach. The Programme is individually focused and uses a variety of activities and learning locations (classroom, internship, institutional settings) to ensure that the learning is relevant.
